A new highway project is being planned for New Zealand’s North Island. The US$399 million (NZ$620 million) highway would take the place of the existing Manawatu Gorge Road. A preferred alignment has been set out and preparations are now underway. The 11.5km route will feature two lanes in either direction for most of its length and will feature a viaduct over the river. It will link Stoney Creek Road with Woodville, while it is due for completion in 2024. The SH3 Manawatu Gorge Road dates back to 1872 but was closed to traffic in 2017 due to problems with frequent landslips.
